About my hearing loss

I met a girl called Beth who inspired me to write a blog to help people to understand my hearing loss. I find it very difficult to talk to people about this and make it out to be all fine and dandy however I am profoundly deaf. (This means no hearing) My deafness started 18 months ago when I had a hearing test and was found to have a mild hearing loss. Since then it has been deteriorating rapidly. We don't know why this has been happening, but looking back, I think I have been deaf for a while longer. Being deaf came as quite a shock to me and has taken some getting used to but meeting other hard of hearing people has made me feel more ‘normal’. Without my friends and family, I don’t know how I would have got through this. I went to a place called The Ear Foundation to look at a new device called a Cochlear Implant that might help me hear. Currently I wear 2 hearing aids that I call bricks.

Maybe there's a cause?

On 12th June I went to the Leicester Royal Infirmary for an appointment with Doctor Isobel Fraine a genetic counsellor. I went there to try and find the cause of my deafness because I am a mystery to the doctors! :) When I went, she was rambling on about some diseases and genetics and asking basic questions. Then she thought I might have auto-immune disease related to my coeliac disease (Coeliac is where you can't eat gluten, wheat and barley). I was quite relieved when she said this because I was quite intrigued to see why I was deaf. However, we don't know if this is the cause but at least we are getting somewhere and I have been referred to Nottingham for the cochlear implant.

What an eventful day!

So today was sports day, eurgh! Yet again I couldn't hear the whistle with all of the background noise. But c'mon, who needs sports day when your at secondary school? The best bit was that our team only had 5 people and most other teams had 10 people so it was obvious we were going to win every game...NOT! :) But did it matter, no because it's the taking part that counts and being a good sport, even if you are sitting on the hill eating chocolate and watching everyone else.

I had the biggest disaster when I was baking tonight. It's Monday and usually I bake. I was making oaty biscuits for an change and I thought the mixture looked a bit flapjacky but anyway I dolloped it on like it said and then, when I went to take it out the oven it looked like one big thin burnt flapjack so I ended up chucking it in the wheelie bin... what a waste of time!
